Ocean Sparkles, 2026
Oil on stretched canvas
91.5 × 91.5 × 4 cm
Inspiration - ‘Ocean Sparkles’ was inspired by a holiday visit to a beach near Warroora Station on the Ningaloo Coast. Listening to the gentle lapping of waves and feeling soft sand underfoot, I watched the sunlight scatter across crystal-clear turquoise water. The dancing light felt both lively and calm, revealing the area’s natural beauty and quiet atmosphere.
Technique & Palette - To capture the depth and clarity of the water in the oil painting, I built the surface by glazing in transparent layers and finished with bright highlights ‘sparkles’ on the tops of the ripples.
Using transparent oil colours helped to suggest looking through clear water at seaweed and sandy seabed. A limited palette of lilac, cool blues, and yellow-orange colours were used to echo the coastline’s tranquil harmony.
The painted image continues over the deep sides of the artwork.
